When I was a middle school student, one of the highlights of the year was the Spring Talent Show. I participated a few times, singing and playing the guitar. Some of my friends would dance or put on skits. As we clapped for one another in the darkened cafeteria, we were discovering something important: there were an awful lot of talented people all around us everyday. We had received remarkable gifts. The summer after my first year of college, I went to a village in Southern India to teach for a month and a half in a mission school. It was a time of great discovery and growth for me in many ways, but when I think back on it, what I remember most is how sick I got one Monday morning. Continued

I recently wrote a letter of reference for one of my former students from Saint James who was applying for a college work-study job. The job was running an afterschool program for middle schoolers, and I knew that he had the heart and the charisma to do a fine job, and I gladly wrote him a glowing reference. Continued
